This is the Brioche Beanie, a free crochet pattern by Nerissa Muijs. It’s a beautiful and quick hat pattern that mimics the look of the knit brioche stitch.
To crochet the Brioche Beanie, I used a 5.0 mm hook. My gauge is very tight in crochet and I always have to size up by at least 1.0 mm. Which is funny, because in knitting my gauge is very loose, and I always have to size down by at least 1.0 mm. In total, I used one skein each of white and grey Classic Bunny yarn by The Black Lamb. This is a lovely, pillow-soft merino-angora blend yarn that I bought last year at the Woodstock Fleece Festival.
Crochet brioche, or interlocking crochet, looks similar to knitted brioche. In crochet brioche, you use one colour of yarn in each row, alternating between the two. This kind of crochet stitch allows the finished piece to feel more stretchy, and possibly warmer due to the thicker fabric.
The yarn was lovely to work with, although it was a bit difficult when I had to rip out stitches. As you can see from the photos, the angora lends a beautiful fuzzy halo to the hat. I’m sure this adds a lot of warmth, perfect for Canadian winters!
I chose white and grey as my colour choices, but I’ve seen projects made up in brighter and higher contrast colours too, which also look great!
